WAUG 2026 Athletics: OAU’s Timileyin Gideon Leads 110m Hurdles Times as Ghana Win 800m Gold

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ghanaian universities and Lead City University featured prominently in the athletics events at the 15th West African University Games (WAUG) 2026, with OAU’s Owoeye Timileyin Gideon recording the fastest time among the listed athletes in the 110m hurdles and Ghana claiming gold in the 800m.

Owoeye Timileyin Gideon of OAU clocked 15.26 seconds in the 110m hurdles to lead the listed results, finishing ahead of Philip Boateng of the University for Development Studies (UDS), who recorded 15.33 seconds.

Evans Gyan of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) followed with 15.64 seconds, while Eke Elijah of the University of Ibadan (UI) clocked 17.90 seconds. Ogini Adekunle of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) completed the listed results in 21.79 seconds.

The fastest times recorded among the listed athletes were:

Ghana Win 800m Gold as OAU Take Silver

In the 800m event at WAUG 2026, Ghana claimed the gold medal, while OAU secured silver and also placed another athlete in fourth position, giving the Nigerian university two athletes in the top four.

Lead City University took the bronze medal, ensuring that the podium featured competition beyond Ghana’s gold-medal success.

OAU’s double presence in the top four added to the university’s showing at the games, while Ghana’s victory underlined the competitive strength of its university athletes in the 800m.
