The Sports Director of the Faculty of Education Students’ Association (NUESA), University of Lagos, Awoniyi Opeyemi, popularly known as Lyon, has expressed confidence in the faculty’s preparedness for the upcoming Vice Chancellor Cup (VC Cup), scheduled for July 2026.
Speaking in an interview with Sportxvibe.com.ng after the conclusion of the Faculty of Education Dean’s Cup — which NAPHER SD emerged as the overall winner — Lyon described the tournament as an important platform for identifying athletes who will represent the faculty at the inter-faculty competition.
Dean’s Cup Served as Selection Ground
Lyon said the competition was designed not only to entertain but also to scout talented players capable of competing at a higher level.
“This particular tournament is more like a scouting platform for the higher tournaments in the school system,” he said. “We have been able to handpick players who stood out and will represent us at the VC Cup.”
He added that the faculty has already identified several promising athletes and believes the VC Cup could expose them to opportunities beyond the university system.
“We are aiming higher for our guys. Not just within the school program. Some of them already compete professionally apart from being students,” Lyon noted.
Reflecting on His Tenure
Looking back on his time as sports director, Lyon described the role as challenging but rewarding, emphasizing the effort required to manage sports affairs within the Faculty of Education.
“It has been an amazing experience. Educational students are not easy to deal with, but the progress we have made is a great achievement for the entire executive and the faculty,” he said.
He also expressed pride in the changes introduced during his administration, saying future leaders would need to build on the foundation already laid.
“Anybody who takes over next year will need to put in extra work. One of our major goals has been to give student-athletes a platform to showcase themselves,” Lyon added.
Focus Shifts to July 2026
With the Dean’s Cup completed, attention now turns to preparations for the VC Cup. Lyon maintained that the faculty is determined to compete strongly and make a significant impact at the inter-faculty tournament.
According to him, the scouting process has already produced a core group of athletes expected to lead the faculty’s challenge when the competition begins in July 2026.
