The Fitchild Showdown Championship is steadily emerging as a platform for youth sports development and national growth and helping to nurture the next generation of Nigerian athletes.
Speaking during the first heat of the Pre-Trial School Athletics competition in Lagos, Moses Ozoumeh, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Fitchild Sport Education Limited described the championship as an avenue for discovering young talents while promoting discipline, healthy competition and long-term national development through sports.
“Today, we are at the first heat of the Pre-Trial School Athletics and it has been an amazing time.
“We have seen kids and teens exhibit great athleticism and the coming Saturday is the finals. We are looking forward to seeing how tremendous they are going to turn out,” he said.
The championship has attracted strong participation from schools and athletics clubs across Lagos, with about 260 student-athletes taking part in the opening heat alone.
According to Ozoumeh, another qualifying heat will further determine the finalists ahead of the grand finale scheduled for Saturday, May 23.
“We had about 260 student-athletes who participated in the heat and we still have a second heat where we will determine who qualifies for the finals,” he said.
Ozoumeh noted that beyond competition, the event is designed to encourage young athletes to improve themselves through training, preparation and commitment.
“A lot of them are going back to prepare. They have one week to train much more and improve. I think we are going to see even better performances than what we saw today,” he said.
The sports administrator stressed that initiatives such as the Fitchild Showdown Championship can contribute significantly to Nigeria’s sporting future by creating early opportunities for students to develop their abilities in structured environments.
“It is a joyful one for me. I’m excited about this and I’m hoping to see it continue and improve national development,” he stated.
In a bid to motivate participants, organisers have also introduced financial rewards and sponsorship support for winners across different categories.
“We do cash prizes ranging from ₦20,000 to ₦30,000 for each category, while partner brands also provide gifts for the winners,” Ozoumeh revealed.
He added that the organisation is seeking more corporate partnerships to expand the competition and increase opportunities for young athletes nationwide.
“We are looking forward to doing much more, and that is why we are seeking more partners into the competition,” he added.
The Fitchild Showdown Championship continues to gain attention as one of the emerging grassroots athletics competitions focused on combining education, youth empowerment and sports excellence in Nigeria.
