A 16-year-old Nigerian cyclist, Kanyechukwu, has commenced a long-distance awareness ride from Enugu to Lagos to promote autism awareness and advocate for increased support for children living with autism across Nigeria and Africa.
The ride, which began in Enugu, is part of a structured advocacy campaign aimed at raising public understanding of autism and encouraging inclusive policies.
The cyclist has made scheduled stops in Awka, Asaba, and Benin City, where community engagement activities and awareness sessions have been held.
Organisers of the campaign said the initiative is designed to create platforms for dialogue on autism, focusing on early diagnosis, intervention, and the need for stronger institutional support systems.
The campaign has also attracted attention from government officials and public figures, including engagement with the First Lady and support from senior state officials.
The route of the awareness ride is planned to cover both urban and rural communities to ensure broader outreach.
The cyclist is expected to continue through Ore, Ijebu Ode, and Abeokuta before arriving in Lagos.
The campaign is scheduled to conclude on April 2, in line with World Autism Awareness Day. Organisers say the timing is intended to align Nigeria’s efforts with global advocacy initiatives focused on autism awareness and inclusion.
A representative of the campaign said the initiative seeks to draw attention to the experiences of children living with autism and to address stigma through sustained public engagement.
The event is expected to culminate in Lagos, where stakeholders, institutions, and members of the public are anticipated to participate in activities marking the end of the ride and reinforcing calls for continued advocacy and policy support.
