12 Nigerian Footballers Who Refused to Choose Between the Books and the Ball

Nigerian Footballers Who Balanced Degrees and Football Careers/ sportxvibe.com.ng

Several Nigerian professional footballers have successfully combined sports and education, earning degrees or diplomas while playing at the highest level. Taiwo Awoniyi’s recent graduation from the PFA Business School adds him to a growing list of Super Eagles stars who balanced academics with their football careers.

This week, Coventry City striker Taiwo Awoniyi added a line to a CV that already reads more like a transcript than a transfer history. The Super Eagles forward completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Global Football Sport Directorship at the PFA Business School, graduating with Merit from a two-year, part-time programme built for professionals who refuse to let the demands of match days crowd out everything else.

On Instagram, Awoniyi called it another proud moment away from the pitch, and thanked the lecturers and teammates-turned-classmates who studied alongside him.

It is not a debut. In 2020, Awoniyi picked up a diploma in Business Administration and Marketing Management from the London School of International Business. Two years later, barely three months after signing for Nottingham Forest, he graduated with a Business Management degree from Buckinghamshire New University.

The PFA Business School qualification is simply the newest chapter in a habit he has kept since his early twenties: whatever city he is playing in, he is also enrolled in something.

Awoniyi is not unusual for doing this. He is, in fact, joining a lineage. Below are the Nigerian footballers, past and present, men and women, who have spent as much discipline on degrees and diplomas as they have on drills.

The Class of Nigerian Footballer-Scholars

Taiwo Awoniyi: He studied  Business Management (Buckinghamshire New University) and Postgraduate Diploma in Global Football Sport Directorship (PFA Business School). The Coventry forward has treated education as a parallel career, stacking a marketing diploma, an undergraduate degree and now a postgraduate qualification in football governance and administration around a Premier League playing schedule, visible groundwork for a life in club leadership once his playing days end.

Wilfred Ndidi: He studied Business and Management (De Montfort University, Leicester). The Super Eagles and Leicester City midfielder completed his degree while an established first-team regular, studying in the same city he played in and stating an interest in continuing further study in the same field.

Kelechi Iheanacho: He studied Business Marketing. The Sevilla forward, a Premier League and FA Cup winner, holds a degree in business marketing, a pairing of subject and profession that gives him a working grasp of the commercial machinery behind the game he plays in.

Seyi Olofinjana: He studied Chemical Engineering (Ladoke Akintola University of Technology). Long before his Premier League spells with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Stoke City and Hull City, Olofinjana trained as a chemical engineer. He has since moved into football administration and talent management, at Chelsea, applying the same analytical grounding to spotting players that he once applied to a lab bench.

Sunday Oliseh: He studied Physical and Health Education (Lagos State University), plus a Diploma in Business Management and multiple UEFA coaching licences. One of Nigeria’s most decorated midfielders in Ajax, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, two World Cups, Olympic gold in Atlanta. Oliseh kept building academic and coaching credentials through and after his playing career, a foundation that carried him into management, including a spell in charge of the Super Eagles.

Efe Ambrose: He studied Psychology. The former Celtic and Hibernian defender earned a psychology degree from a Nigerian university, a subject with obvious relevance to a profession built as much on temperament as on tackling.

Sone Aluko: He studied Business Management (University of Houston). The former Super Eagles forward began his studies at the University of Tulsa before financial pressure forced a transfer to Houston. He graduated with a 3.6 GPA and now coaches in the Premier League at Ipswich Town, having proven his academic staying power under harder circumstances than most on this list.

Leon Balogun: He studied Social Science (Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz). The Rangers and Super Eagles defender completed his degree in Germany, adding a academic credential to a defensive career that has spanned the Bundesliga, the Premier League and Scottish football.

Obafemi Martins: He studiedEntrepreneurship and Emerging Markets certificate (HarvardX). Years after a playing career that took him through Inter Milan, Newcastle United and Rubin Kazan, the former Super Eagles striker returned to education off the pitch, completing a Harvard-affiliated certificate with a reported weighted grade of 98 percent.

Justice Adokiye Amiesimaka: He studied Law (University of Lagos). A member of Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, Amiesimaka studied law during his playing career and carried it into public life afterward, later serving as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Rivers State — one of the clearest examples of a football career opening directly into a second, entirely different profession.

Rasheedat Ajibade: She studied Accounting (Lagos State Polytechnic) and Sports Psychology (Barça Innovation Hub). The Super Falcons captain, now at Atlético Madrid, has pursued two separate qualifications around her playing career, at one point delaying professional commitments specifically to complete the second.

Michelle Alozie: She studied Molecular Biology (Yale University). Perhaps the most striking case on this list: the Super Falcons and Houston Dash defender graduated from an Ivy League university and works part-time as a cancer research technician at Texas Children’s Hospital, running an active research role alongside a professional football career.
