Team Nigeria is ramping up its preparations for the upcoming World Youth Scrabble Championship (WYSC), set to take place from September 6 to 8 in Sri Lanka.
In an exclusive interview with Sportxvibe.com.ng, Team Nigeria Captain Nwabuzor Joy revealed the team’s rigorous training regimen. “We have been dedicating ourselves to intense preparation, including group studies, quizzes, and individual practice sessions,” Joy said. “Our goal is to assert Nigeria’s dominance at the championship.”

Joy, who won the gold medal in the female category at the 2023 National Youth Games, emphasized her personal commitment to the sport. “I am continuously revising old study materials and learning new words every day,” she added. “Each day, I work on mastering the game further.”
The Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) has selected a 12-player squad to represent the nation in Sri Lanka, comprising eight boys and four girls. Notable players include Prestige Archibong, the winner of the African Youth Scrabble Championship (WASC U-15); Ese Ejenakevbe; Sufyan Boluwatife; and nine-year-old scrabble prodigy Saviour Onazi. At 17, Boluwatife is the oldest member of the team, while Onazi is the youngest.
The female contingent includes Joy Nwabuzor, Hauwa Abdullahi, Sophia Ekeruche, and Michelle Ikekeregor, who will all compete under Nigeria’s banner.
With the championship fast approaching, Team Nigeria is poised to make a significant impact on the global stage.
