Team Nigeria is set to commence its preparation for the upcoming World Youth Scrabble Championship in Sri Lanka, with a training camp scheduled to begin on Friday, August 30, in Abuja.
The tournament is slated to take place from September 6 to 8.
Coach Samuel Eromosele, in a statement released by the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) Youth Wings media team, confirmed that the players’ visas have been secured, allowing the team to focus on their final preparations.
“We’re grateful to God that all visa issues have been resolved, and the team will enter camp in Abuja on Friday,” said Coach Eromosele.
“Our preparations are in full swing. The camping will give us the chance to fine-tune our skills and strategies. Some of our players have just returned from the Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship in Bayelsa, which was a great experience.”
The coach highlighted that the camp would focus on honing technical skills, which are crucial for success at the global event.
He also announced that Sufyan Boluwatife will serve as the team captain and emphasized the importance of player welfare during the camp.
Coach Eromosele expressed gratitude to the NSF President, Toke Aka, and the board members for their unwavering support.
“The NSF has been extremely supportive, ensuring that all our needs are met. We are thankful to them and the entire scrabble community,” he added, confidently stating that Team Nigeria is aiming to secure medals in Sri Lanka.
The NSF has selected a 12-player squad for the championship, comprising eight boys and four girls.
The team includes several standout players, such as Prestige Archibong, the African Youth Scrabble Championship (WASC U-15) winner; Ese Ejenakevbe; team captain Sufyan Boluwatife; and the youngest member, nine-year-old scrabble prodigy Saviour Onazi. Boluwatife, at 17, is the oldest member of the squad.
The female contingent is made up of Joy Nwabuzor, Hauwa Abdullahi, Sophia Ekeruche, and Michelle Ikekeregor, all of whom will compete under the Nigerian flag.
As the championship approaches, Team Nigeria is determined to make a strong showing on the global stage, bringing pride to the nation.
