Team Nigeria has bowed out of both tennis and taekwondo events at the 2025 FISU World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, but shifts focus to badminton for potential medal success.
In taekwondo, Shukurat Omobisola Abdusalam lost 1-4 to Salima Guyeva of Azerbaijan in the women’s -45kg round of 32. Jesse Jonah also fell 1-4 to Italy’s Davide Lupo in the men’s -68kg round of 64. Florence Member lost 1-2 to Denmark’s Katherine Kamp Nordentoft Frederiksen in the women’s -67kg, while Olajumoke Blessing Olateju was defeated by China’s Dabin Song in the women’s +73kg event.
In tennis, Hope Udoaka was eliminated after a 1-4 loss to Portugal’s Patricia Santos. Udoaka had earlier impressed with 3-0 wins over China’s Pui Man Cheung and Turkey’s Ezel Arslan in the preliminary rounds.
All eyes are now on Wednesday’s badminton fixtures, where Christiana Olajumoke Obasanmi will face India’s Devika Sihag in the women’s singles round of 64, and Ohireme Lucky Steven will take on Japan’s Osuke Sakurai in the men’s singles round of 64.
