FISU medal hopeful, John thanks Bayelsa’ Tennis Chairman

A student-athlete of Benson Idahosa University, Matthew John has expressed gratitude to the chairman of the Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association, (BYSTTA) Ama-ebi Ebikpolade.

John who is a product of the (BYSTTA), emerged champion at the 2025 FISU Trials, securing his place to represent Nigeria at the Rhine-Ruhr FISU World University Games in Germany.

The Benson Idahosa University scholar showcased exceptional skill in the men’s singles event held at the University of Jos, underlying Bayelsa’s growing influence in Nigerian table tennis.

In a touching message to his mentor and father figure, Matthew expressed his joy, acknowledging the support of the chairman in his journey.

“Good afternoon Dad. I’m thrilled to share that I won the Men’s Singles Champion of the 2025 FISU Trials! I’m forever grateful for your unwavering support and guidance. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without you. Thank you for believing in me. Love you!,” he said as quoted in the Bayelsa’s Ministry of Youth website.

Matthew will be joined by fellow Nigerian athlete Samuel Boboye as they don the green and white in Germany from July 16–27, 2025, facing off against the best university players from around the globe.
