Bayero University, Kano (BUK) Chess Team has kicked off their campaign impressively at the ongoing 27th Nigeria University Games (NUGA) Chess Tournament held at the University of Jos.
The chess competition, which began on November 9, 2025, features 12 top Nigerian universities competing in the male category.
The event is played in the classical chess format over seven intense rounds. Medal winners will be decided based on the total points accumulated by individual players and teams throughout the tournament.
Each university fields four players per round with two reserves, allowing all six team members to actively compete for individual and team chess medals at NUGA 2025.
In the opening round, BUK faced a tough challenge against the University of Ibadan, narrowly losing by 2.5 – 1.5.
However, the BUK Chess Team quickly regained momentum with a commanding 3 – 1 victory over Nasarawa State University, Keffi in Round 2.
Currently, Bayero University, Kano is competing against Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Round 3, with the match ongoing.

According to BUK Chess Team’s head coach, Fatihu Auwal Abubakar, the team remains optimistic about sustaining their strong performance and pushing for podium finishes as the competition progresses.
