Outgoing Sports Secretary of the University of Lagos Students’ Union (ULSU), Adebayo Okikiola, has reflected on his tenure, highlighting landmark achievements and expressing confidence in the incoming Sports Secretary to sustain the momentum of sports development within the institution.
Despite describing his tenure as brief, Okikiola said it was driven by purposeful leadership and a commitment to advancing sports across the University of Lagos community.
Among the major milestones recorded during his administration were the successful introduction and execution of the Interfaculty Athletics Games and the ULSU Super Cup.
According to him, both competitions significantly boosted student participation, strengthened inter-faculty relationships, and promoted healthy competition across the university.
Okikiola also noted a unique connection between himself and his successor, Ajeigbe Emmanuel, revealing that both progressed from serving as Faculty Sports Secretaries before assuming leadership roles at the ULSU level.
He said the shared experience provides a solid foundation for effective sports administration and reflects a deep understanding of the responsibilities attached to the office.
The outgoing Sports Secretary further recalled working closely with the incoming official during the organisation of Artlympics 6.0: “The Sceptre of Seven,” a major sporting competition between the Faculties of Arts and Creative Arts. The event remains one of the biggest Dean’s Cup tournaments in the University of Lagos and marked a defining moment in their collaborative efforts.
Offering advice to his successor, Okikiola urged the new Sports Secretary to lead with vision, innovation, and dedication while prioritising inclusivity, athlete welfare, and stronger collaboration with faculty sports representatives.
He expressed confidence that the incoming administration has the opportunity to further strengthen sports as a unifying force that promotes excellence, leadership, and student engagement across the University of Lagos.
“I wish you a successful and fulfilling tenure,” Okikiola said as he formally handed over the reins of the ULSU Sports Secretariat.
