Zimbabwe has introduced archery into school’s curriculum of both primary and secondary education, in a deliberate step to strengthen the developmental growth of the sport from amateur to elite level.
In an interview with Sportxvibe.com.ng, Queenie Grawticke, Member of Zimbabwe Archery Association disclosed this, saying that the association is focused on reviving the sport.
“We are starting to get more young students. It is growing but slow. Taking it to school is reviving the hope of archery success in Zimbabwe because we can get them out there. There has been this perception that archery is for the elite and it is not for school but now we have put it into the schools’ curriculum and traditional sports,” she said.
She added that the association is seeking grants to secure equipment for the schools and organise capacity building programmes for teachers.
“We are trying to get some grants and the first thing is obviously get people taught and it is going to a thing of teach the teachers and they will be able to teach on and get a group of schools in one area so one school will have the equipment and all the other schools will join and go depending on how many times in a week because there is no way anyone can afford to equip every single school,” she said.
