Forty student-athletes representing eight schools will battle for top honors at the maiden Rwanda Interschool Scrabble Tournament scheduled for June 28 at Nature Kigali in Nyarutarama.

The groundbreaking competition marks a significant milestone in the growth of Scrabble as an educational and competitive sport in Rwanda, bringing together some of the country’s brightest young minds for a day of strategy, vocabulary, and intellectual challenge.

Speaking to Sportxvibe.com.ng, tournament organizer Niyogakiza Jean Claude (J.C.) described the event as a historic moment for school sports in Rwanda.

“This is our first interschool Scrabble tournament in Rwanda,” he said.

Beyond determining the best Scrabble players among participating schools, he said the tournament was designed to promote literacy, critical thinking, and vocabulary mastery among students.

According to Jean Claude, the initiative will also serve as a platform to identify and develop young Scrabble talents while strengthening the game’s position as a valuable academic extracurricular activity in schools across the country.

The event is expected to foster collaboration among schools, Rwanda’s education stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education (MINEDUC), Rwanda Education Board (REB), and the wider Scrabble community.

“Ultimately, our goal is not just to crown a winner. It is to inspire a generation of confident, articulate learners who carry the values of words, strategy, and excellence well beyond the game board,” Jean Claude stated.

He advised the participating students, urging them to prepare themselves for the tournament.

“You won’t always draw the letters you want — but you can always choose how you arrange them. That’s Scrabble. That’s life too.

“Stay patient. Think ahead. Turn a tough hand into a brilliant move. The board is set — make yours count,” he said.
