Nigeria’s media representatives, Team Truth, were crowned champions of the US Freedom Cup 2026 after an emphatic 6-2 victory over Team Opportunity in a thrilling final held in Lagos.
The six-a-side tournament, organized to celebrate the 250th of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence, delivered excitement, camaraderie, and impressive football displays as media professionals and stakeholders battled for top honours.
Team Truth’s journey to the title was far from straightforward. The eventual champions first overcame a resilient Team Yali side 5-3 in a fiercely contested semi-final encounter to book their place in the final.
The competition showcased a blend of experience and skill, with veteran football enthusiasts including Harry Iwuala, Mr. Mike on the pitch while General Godwin Enekhena and Lekan Otufodurin giving instructions from off pitch to inspire participants and entertain supporters with flashes of brilliance throughout the tournament.
In the championship match, Team Truth proved too strong for Team Opportunity, producing a clinical performance that underlined their superiority. Key contributors to the title-winning campaign included Edwin, Jerome, Dotun Omisakin, Victor, Bolawa Pelumi, Caleb Ijioma, and several other standout performers who carried the team to glory.
Meanwhile, Team Liberty secured third place after defeating Team Legacy 4-1 in the bronze-medal match.
Speaking on the significance of the event, Amanda Roach-Brown, Acting Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, highlighted the tournament’s role in strengthening the bonds between both nations.
According to Roach-Brown, the competition formed part of the Freedom 250 celebrations, marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence.
“This is our Freedom Cup Freedom 250 because the United States is celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence this year,” she said.
She also noted that the tournament coincides with the excitement surrounding the FIFA World Cup 2026, which is being hosted across 11 cities in the United States.
“We brought together the Lagos State Government, the U.S. Consulate, participants of our exchange programmes, and Nigerian journalists to play friendly matches and celebrate the bonds we share through sports,” Roach-Brown added.
The US Freedom Cup 2026 successfully blended football, friendship, and diplomacy, reinforcing the strong cultural and people-to-people ties between Nigeria and the United States while providing a memorable sporting spectacle for all involved.
