The Royal Aces basketball team has shifted focus to securing third place after losing 66–54 to Dolphins in the semifinal of the ongoing Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Women’s League finals in Lagos.
The Segun Ojo–tutored side went into the semifinal clash with high hopes after a hard-fought 40–37 victory over Bayelsa Blue Whales in the quarterfinal.
However, their opponents, Dolphins, came alive and dominated throughout the game.
The first quarter showcased Dolphins’ coordinated play, pressing forward to earn points through free throws and three-pointers, which saw them take a 17–11 lead.
Royal Aces tightened their defense in the second quarter and pushed forward to reduce the gap, but Dolphins maintained their advantage, going into halftime with a 33–27 lead.
In the third quarter, Dolphins capitalized on multiple free throws while Royal Aces struggled to close the gap, stretching the scoreline to 51–38.
The Dolphins’ defense proved too strong in the final quarter, restricting Royal Aces to their own half and sealing a 66–54 victory.
Speaking to newsmen, Royal Aces coach Segun Ojo attributed the defeat to his team’s defensive lapses.
“Our defense was not good enough. In team defense, we struggled in that area,” he said.
He, however, commended his players and expressed optimism about finishing stronger than last year, when they placed fourth.
