Tobilola Ogunsanya, a final-year student of Electrical Engineering at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and captain of the university’s chess team, has expressed optimism about the team’s preparation for the upcoming Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) Games.
The 11th edition of the FASU Games co-hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU) is scheduled for September 20-29, 2024.
Ogunsanya, while reflecting on the team’s readiness, stated, “Our level of preparation is about 80 percent. We’ve been playing numerous training games to gear up for the FASU Games.”
He also expressed pride in representing UNILAG, saying, “We are the best school in Nigeria. Playing at the FASU Games means a lot to me personally. When you compete, you always want to be at the top, so it’s a great honor to represent the university of first choice as part of the chess team.”
The FASU Games are a prestigious platform where top university athletes across Africa compete in various sports, including chess.
The All-Africa University Games, organised by FASU, were first held in 1975 in Accra, Ghana.
Nigeria last hosted the Games in 2004 in Bauchi State. The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU), both located in Lagos State, will co-host the 11th FASU Games with team sports including basketball, football, volleyball and handball, and individual sports such as athletics, badminton, chess, judo, table tennis, tennis, karate, taekwondo and swimming.
