55th Molade Okoya-Thomas Cup: Odusanya, Adegoke retain titles consecutively

Top seed table tennis player Bose Odusanya and Muiz on Wednesday December 20, retained their titles in both the men’s and women’s singles categories respectively of the annual Molade Okoya-Thomas Table Tennis Cup.

Odusanya extended her dominance in the women’s singles to win the title for the ninth time consecutively while in the men’s singles category, Muiz Adegoke secured the title for the second time consecutively.

At the grand finale played inside the indoor sports hall at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, the turn out of dignitaries and budding players to cheer the finalists echoed the pedigree of the oldest sports competition in Nigeria.

Before the singles final, winners emerged out the other events which included doubles as well as para class 1-5 (men and women) and para class 6-10 (men and women).

The highpoint of the final was between Adegoke and Emmanuel Augustine but the former had a stroll in the pack with a comprehensive 4-0 (12-10, 11-7, 13-11, 11-3) win.

In the women’s singles category, it was as a repeat of the last edition between Odusanya and Anu Anjuwon as both were the finalists in the women’s singles category.

After exchange of tennis artistries, Odusanya against Anjuwon which ended 4-0 to claim her ninth title.

An elated Adegoke described the win as compensation for missing the 2023 World Youth Championship held in Slovenia.

“I am so happy that I have something to show for my efforts this year especially after missing the WYC and I hope I can continue like this in the next tournament,” the national junior champion said.

The son of the founder, Deji Okoya-Thomas lauded the players for their display while promising a glamorous edition next year.

“We hope to make the tournament bigger next year by setting up an LOC that will be in charge of the whole event and we hope to make it more colorful,” Okoya-Thomas said.
